failures

Our failures are real, our failures count, when we hold success as a binary outcome - everything we did, every tear we shed, every drop we sweated, every year we gave up is worthless.
Failures are my stepping stones to success and from now on will be treated as such.

What was it?

I started Keto UK out of frustration with US recipes when I was living in the UK. Almost every decent recipe was American, which meant almost every ingredient needed a substitute and every measurement needed a conversion.

It just felt like it shouldn't be that hard to try and stick to a simple way of eating.

This inspired me to set up Keto UK as a side project. I set up a Facebook page and newsletter and scheduled 90 keto memes, posting 3 a day on facebook. The call to action was to sign up to the newsletter.

I planned to turn the newsletter into something if/when this grew large enough.

I would then email recipes, do sponsored posts etc. There isn't a good Keto newsletter in the UK.

What were the results?

  • After a year the facebook page had 15,000 likes and the newsletter had 2000 subscribers.
  • I sent out weekly recipes from Jan-May
  • I received sponsored products to promote
  • After 5 months I couldn't get users to respond to emails, with a new job and other projects that looked promising I felt I had to hand this on. (I also moved to the US)
  • I sold Keto UK and all it's assets to a brilliant couple in the UK

Post mortem

  • Maybe I'm lazy but I expected more from this.
  • It is pretty cool that I grew the following all through automation that wasn't spammy. People loved the memes.
  • Having handed this over - I can see now how this newsletter could have been run. Ketoers also want a source of factual, trustworthy keto news, stories and development. This could have been so much more.
  • Selling it on proved there was value there, but not enough for the time I put in.

    Continually in progress

If you've failed, and you want to talk about it but no one "gets it" or want's to talk to you about it. I'm here.

If not, take 10 seconds for yourself, breathe deep, watch the water - and let's jump in.

Either way I would fully recommend reading "When Smart People Fail".
