failures

"Improvement at anything is based on thousands of tiny failures, and the magnitude of your success is based on how many times you’ve failed at something. If someone is better than you at something, then it’s likely because she has failed at it more than you have. If someone is worse than you, it’s likely because he hasn’t been through all of the painful learning experiences you have"

Our failures are real, our failures count, when we hold success as a binary outcome - everything we did, every tear we shed, every drop we sweated, every year we gave up is worthless.
Failures are my stepping stones to success and from now on will be treated as such.

BestAppleWatchApps.com & Apple Watch Weekly

What was it?

A searchable, indexable apple watch app listing site & a weekly vlog.

I love my apple watch. I built an app for my apple watch. I write about what I hate about my apple watch but finding new apps in insanely hard.

I created BestAppleWatchApps.com (BAWA) and Apple Watch Weekly (AWW) because when were getting ready to launch Stretchy we discovered it is basically impossible to distribute apple watch apps.

The community is fragmented. I posted about it on reddit and got 100 upvotes in one day. People wanted a weekly new app suggestion.

So we scraped the apple watch app store and created BAWA, I started a weekly vlog about new apps and published the apple watch weekly.

What were the results?

  • I taught myself how to programatically create 9k web pages
  • We got +4000 subscribers
  • Video engagement was really low
  • SEO did not pick up - we show up in searches, but no major footfall - we needed links and didn't get them
  • COVID19 came around - all of a sudden I was overworked, and burnt out

Post mortem

  • Creating +9k pages programatically without help was sick!
  • An apple watch vlog just needed more time and energy. A lot of people from the Apple Watch world wanted to help but only with stuff like TikTok. I needed researchers to help find great apps.
  • Recording my face and an apple watch was a pain in the butt to record and edit.
  • I just didn't feel the return on investment to keep broadcasting.
  • Without constant scraping the listing starts to go out of date, but the ROI isn't there to keep going.
  • A rep from apple reached out to say thanks - that was cool.

    Continually in progress

If you've failed, and you want to talk about it but no one "gets it" or want's to talk to you about it. I'm here.

If not, take 10 seconds for yourself, breathe deep, watch the water - and let's jump in.

Either way I would fully recommend reading "When Smart People Fail".
